The Maryland Terrapins emerged from the 2004 ACC tournament as the improbable champions, defeating the Duke Blue Devils, who entered this year’s tourney as five-time defending champions. Both teams faced stiff competition before meeting in the finals, but did what was necessary to reach the Sunday afternoon showcase. The sixth-seeded Terrapins overcame a 19-point halftime deficit, thanks in large part to super point guard John Gilchrist, to shock the second-seeded NC State Wolfpack 85-82 in the semifinal matchup.
